Entrepreneur Origins

1996 — 2010

Carlos Pina establishes an agency which serves medical professionals in the fields of beauty and anti-aging among its clients. His clients included renowned hair restoration surgeon, Dr. Bernard Nusbaum, who is a pioneer in hair transplantation surgery and an industry leader. Piña assisted in overseas consultations for international hair transplant candidates as well as handled the practice’s marketing communications.

In addition, having suffered from hair loss himself, Piña undergoes successful hair transplantation surgery with Dr. Nusbaum. During this time, Pina’s daughter joins him in his business after graduating with an MBA from the University of Miami.

Discovering Laser Technology

2010 — 2012

Carlos Pina is introduced to a laser therapy comb as a nonsurgical treatment for hair loss to prevent hair loss and complement other treatments and procedures. Through his personal experience as a hair loss patient and businessman, Carlos Piña first sees the potential to create an effective, wearable, laser product for the treatment of hair loss which is more convenient and efficient than other devices on the market and starts developing a prototype.

Founding of Capillus1

2012 — 2021

The Piña family founds the Capillus1® company & invents the 1st wearable laser cap to be cleared by the FDA for treatment of alopecia. Carlos Pina, along with his daughter Frances, started his first hair restoration laser manufacturing company as a 3-person operation in October of 2012 from the garage of their Miami, Florida home. The laser cap design was a revolutionary introduction to the market at the time which provided clinical strength laser therapy in a wearable design that encouraged compliance. They named this device after the company, Capillus1.

During this period of growth, Maria Piña leaves her tenure at the finance department of the University of Miami School of Communications to help the family grow its operations.

As demand increased, the Piñas collaborated with financial partners to expand distribution and diversify products. In 2021, they transitioned the company, now known as Curallux, to their partners.

Meet the Xtrallux Founders

Carlos Piña, CEO of Xtrallux.

It was through Carlos's own personal experience as a hair loss patient and businessman that he first saw the potential to create an effective, convenient non-surgical product for the treatment of hair loss.

For years Carlos Piña consulted for marketing services with Miami-based, hair restoration surgeon, Dr. Bernard Nusbaum. Carlos underwent several successful hair restoration surgeries himself with Nusbaum. After learning about the advantages of light therapy to treat hair loss, Carlos invented a home-use solution utilizing cutting-edge technology in a wearable design that encourages compliance, and ultimately efficacy of results.

This first device he introduced was the CapillusPro by the company he founded, Capillus, alongside his wife and daughter. They began that company from the garage of their home in 2012 from where they designed the product, handled customer inquiries and even fulfilled their own orders.

After founding and growing the company and its brands to product lines serving various specialities, in 2021 the Piña family left Curallux (formerly Capillus) in the hands of the their partners. 1After exiting the former company, the Piña family returned to their roots and began to develop a more powerful family of devices to once again satisfy the changing needs of the hair loss market. After many months of product development, testing and setting up their new operation in Miami, Xtrallux was born.

Is Laser Therapy Right for Your Hair Loss?

Xtrallux Hair Regrowth caps are recommended for adults (men or women) who are experiencing mild to moderate hair loss due to androgenic alopecia with Fitzpatrick Skin Types I to IV as per indications for use. If your hair loss is advanced or due to scarring alopecias, this device is not right for you. Please consult with your healthcare provider for other types of hair loss (ie. medically-induced, areata, universalis, or totalis alopecias, effluvium, etc) and skin types.

Will laser therapy work for me if I'm bald?

Xtrallux is indicated for mild to moderate hair loss cases. If you're hair loss is advanced, you are not a candidate for laser therapy. Please read the indications for use on the product pages for detail.

Is laser therapy dangerous for dark skin tones?

Laser therapy at 650 nm and <5mW has never had any reported adverse effects for ANY skin tone, including the darkest of skin tones but due to limitations in testing protocols has only been clinically tested for treatment of AGA on skin types 1-4. Xtrallux devices are not cleared for dark skin tones due to the substantial equivalence process of FDA clearances.

Does laser therapy really work to treat hair loss?

Yes. The United States Food & Drug Administration has cleared Xtrallux hair regrowth devices as effective for treating androgenetic alopecia (see full indication for use). The clearance is based on substantiation by earlier submissions to the FDA providing clinical data to verify that this type of medical device emitting red laser energy results in an increase in terminal hair counts over the course of time with continued use. Terminal hair is defined as long, coarse, well-pigmented hair which differs from vellus hair.

Xtrallux manufactures devices use this technology which has been proven to increase counts of terminal hair in clinical trials accepted as substantiation by the FDA for prior clearances for this device classification.

Keep in mind that results will vary from person to person. Each case is different.
